GAH

HELP  -  I need a technical person!

I have just noticed that my posts are not automatically updating in the blog-rolls of those nice people who link to me ... This happened once before after I'd set myself up with Twitterfeed. On that occasion, I spent hours sorting it but have inevitably forgotten what I did ... It's something to do with RSS feeds, I think.

Anyone know?

On the other hand, if this does appear automatically in your list, ignore me. I must have sorted it.

Oh Nicola, this is the nightmare of changing addresses! Rhiannon put an automatic Redirect for me on the old site URL but it involved changing the html on the template, which was beyond me. So that works for people who have bookmarked you but not for automatic links. I had to contact all the people that I know had linked to me to get them to change it. Do you know all yours?

And I've changed the address on my link to you btw.

Oh bloody hell!!! I suppose what I can do is keep putting HELP! I've GONE AWAY posts on the OLD blog and soon enough people who've linked to me will notice ....

Actually there's a further problem because the Gah! post I'm answering didn't show up on the new link on my page. I saw it on Twitter.

Someone cleverer than me needs to help you.

Hmmm. I think I need to go and eat something. I did sort it before, so I should be able to do it this time ...

This may work:

Click on Customise on the banner at the top.
Click on Edit Layout
Click Add a Gadget
Scroll down to Subscription Links - that should add an RSS feed

DOT said...

Forget that :) - You are RSS linked already. Perhaps people have to re-connect themselves as I did with your new address.

Nicola, I just manually changed the rss feed to point to your new address and up came the current post and previous (I only show last two posts). Presumably your readers need to sign up afresh for the rss feed, as that address changes as well as your site address. Perhaps a large GONE AWAY post should mention that.

Sleepyjohn - it doesn't seem to be the RSS aspect. The RSS is correctly set up as you saw (and thanks, Dot, for your suggestion along those lines). I suspect (because this happened before) it's something to do with setting up a twitterfeed. Which I've now removed. But now my head is spinning and I'm stuck. I'm probably missing something really simple. Will try again later.

Thanks, all, for your efforts!

Gah! has now come through! So something has been fixed!

I've got you feeding to my blog just fine - the onus was on me to change your details and subscribe to the new blog, before then adding you to my feed gadget.

No idea where my puddy Cat went, though... No wait a minute - the preview shows it as back!

You must be all-ok else I would have had a problem. Unfortunately, you can't automatically update everyone else's pages because that would be a privacy issue - this blog could be something entirely different as far as Blogger - and all those who subscribe - is concerned.

So perhaps a 'please add my feed' plea on a regular basis will be necessary?

Don't worry, Nicola. I doubt you really need to do that. People will soon realise that you've vanished and will be as keen to add your feed as they were in the first instance. It's not as if you've become boring, now, is it?

(Although you're not as crabbit as you once were, I fear!)

Cat - I agree, I have become hopelessly uncrabbit! It's all that chocolate, I think. Also, you're all so very nice on this blog that it's really hard for me to maintain my image.

Re your pic coming back - that was ME!

And thanks for your reassurance.

Mary - good! Perhaps I've done something. (Wish I knew what though ...)

Yayy - you rescued my cat!

I'm going to go out on a limb here and suggest that you cannot be (have never been) as crabbit as you profess to be. You have a blog designed to help and advise would-be writers, and you respond to their queries and comments individually.

Methinks one cannot be crabbit and yet so generous with one's time and knowledge...

However, I shall google 'crabbit' and just make sure....

Nicola, darling, I'm of no help at all, but the beagle has offered a basket of chocolate and corresponding chocolate martinis. Oh, and she suggests switching to Wordpress.

Nicola Morgan said...

Lynn - the beagle wouldn't be the one having to do the switching (again) but I'm happy to accept her other offerings.

Anyway, methinks it's sorted. I, meanwhile, now probably have high blood pressure. But i'm partying again tonight (with agent, glory be to her) so I'll survive

Nicola Morgan said...

All sorted - no need for more help. Thanks, all! What a bloody irritating day (but lovely that so many people still with me)

Hello Nikola,
I want you to publish my 280,000 word epic fiction novel. It has a great cast of characters, all called John. The story is good, but too hard for me to explain properly. You will just have to read it - I guarantee you will enjoy it! Also, I believe that the fiction novel will make a great cartoon too. I will send you plasticine models of the Johns with the novel. We will make millions of pounds.

There. Did that re-inject a dose of crabbit? ; )

Nicola, if you want to track down most of the places which link to your old blog you should be able to find them by Googling "link:http://add the rest of the website address here dot com". You'll find an embarrassingly long list of places, and could leave messages on blogs where appropriate. IF that's a help, which is probably isn't. But people are going to have to update their links and readers themselves, I think.

(Including me: I'll go do that now. See you later.)

Just a confirmation that your new address is updating on my blog roll just fine.

Hope you enjoyed the party!

Just wondering - while awaiting Beagle's 12.30am medicine time - if you realised that the link on your website still directs to your old blog site?

When's the house-warming?

Nicola Morgan said...

Elen - thing is that clever as your letter is, it's not half as amusing as the real ones I've just been shown!!

Jane - yes. You are right of course

Clare - oh bloody hell, of course. Gah. And I can't change it without paying my website guy...

Mary Hoffman said...

But if you can do the automatic redirect it won't matter and you won't have to pay anyone.
